5% Carbon Dioxide/Balance Oxygen
Uses
Carbon Dioxide is an essential constituent of tissue fluids and as such should be supplement at an optimum level in the blood. The gas therefore is needed to supplement various anæsthetic and oxygenation mixtures for use under special conditions such as cardio-pulmonary by-pass surgery and the management of renal dialysis. It has a limited place as a respiratory stimulant and is also used in the investigation and assessment of chronic respiratory disease.
The main use of 95% oxygen/5% carbon dioxide medical gas mixture is to stimulate respiration after a period of apnoea and in the management of chronic respiratory obstruction after the obstruction has been relieved.
Dosage and Administration
There is no distinction in the use of 95% oxygen/5% carbon dioxide medical gas mixture in any age group.
The duration and circumstances of the exposure to 95% oxygen/5% carbon dioxide medical gas mixture are always at the discretion of the attending physician who makes the decision in the light of the particular requirements. 95% oxygen/5% carbon dioxide medical gas mixture is usually administered by inhalation through the lungs. Cylinders should only be used in conjunction with medical oxygen gas pressure regulators. |
